Maersk Installs Hydrocurrent Waste Heat Recovery
April 13, 2016
A new waste heat recovery system developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Calnetix Technologies has been installed on Maersk Line vessel ‘Arnold Maersk’. The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) system can generate electrical power from low-temperature heat sources, including main engine jacket cooling water at around 85°C. The installed version has an output of 125kW, reducing the load on the ship’s main generator and reducing CO2 emissions. The debut installation follows tests on a pilot ORC machine at Calnetix’s factory last year, which resulted in approvals from ClassNK and Lloyd's Register. A white paper produced by Calnetix Technologies explores the new technology in depth.
