The World’s First High-Performance, High-Speed 2MW Motor/Generator

July 2nd, 2004

California, USA. - July 2004 – Calnetix, the global leader in high performance, high speed motors and generators, will have presented The future genset for Navies ships is now realityat ASNE Day 2004. This Calnetix presentation has been eagerly awaited by those who have been following the development of the world’s first 2MW high speed motor/generator contract awarded to Calnetix by Turbomeca. This project demonstrates a high speed gas turbine power generation system that can compete in performance while providing a significant size and weight advantage, with diesel generation systems, currently the standard for shipboard applications.

The presentation has a summary of the design, development, and testing of Calnetix’s 2MW advanced high speed PM generator. The presentation will further explore the advantages of Turbomeca’s high speed gas turbine alternator, GTA, over more conventional technologies such as diesel generators and gas turbines coupled to low speed conventional generators through speed reduction gear box in our presentation. Some of these advantages are: (1) smaller foot print and lower weight, see Figure 1, (2) operational flexibility due to GTA’s inherent variable speed capability, and (3) higher reliability and lower maintenance cost. In addition to ship board auxiliary power system, this technology is also being evaluated for train and oil & gas applications.

This is the second such development contract Calnetix recently received for a high speed machine in the megawatt (MW) range, and Calnetix clearly sees their proven technology in applications as high as 30MW for both high speed generators and motors.

About Calnetix

Calnetix, a privately held high tech product service company based in California, USA, is the global leader in high speed motors, generators, magnetic bearings, and integrated magnetic drive systems. The company’s products are utilized in distributed power generation, power conditioning, gas processing, semiconductor manufacturing, medical equipment and other industries worldwide. Up to date Calnetix’s technology has not been matched in terms of high speeds at high power levels. Calnetix had gained the reputation of global leader in high speed motors and generators by having the most amount of high speed units operating in the field and by successfully developed large number of high speed machine projects.
