Calnetix Technologies Awarded Two Patents for Electromagnetic Actuator and Linear Velocity Sensor

June 20th, 2012

Cerritos, Calif. – June 19, 2012 – Calnetix Technologies, a pioneer in developing and manufacturing high-speed permanent magnet motor generators, power electronics and magnetic bearings for a variety of applications and industries, recently received two new patents.

The awards covered the company’s High-Aspect-Ratio Homopolar Permanent-Magnet-Biased Electromagnetic Actuators and Sensors for non-contact measuring of linear rotor velocities in rotating machines.

“Traditionally, homopolar permanent-biased electromagnetic actuators had the tendency to have shorter length and larger diameter compared to more conventional heteropolar EM-biased actuators,” said Inventor and Calnetix’s Principal Research Engineer Alexei Filatov. “While it was an advantage in some machines, in other applications, it would be preferable to have a higher ratio between the bearing length and diameter. This invention allowed us to better address the needs of such applications. It also allowed us to design homopolar permanent-biased magnetic bearings that could be used as direct replacements of the heteropolar EM-biased actuators in the existing machines, offering a significant performance improvement for the existing users of machines on magnetic bearings.”

Calnetix also developed a linear non-contact velocity sensor that can be used to provide information about the linear axial velocity of the rotor to a magnetic bearing controller.

“We utilized this sensor in combination with Calnetix’s patented axial electromagnetic actuator with a flux feedback to improve the performance of a passive axial magnetic bearing. This could be beneficial for a variety of machines on magnetic bearings,” said Filatov.
