Torrance, California, USA.  Leading high speed motor/generator and magnetic bearing manufacturer Calnetix has designed and fabricated what looks to be the first cost effective high speed motor/generator packaged with magnetic bearings. This unit can be used for motoring or generating 100KW of power at 60,000 rpm. Weighing less than 225 lb., it is significantly smaller and lighter than comparable low speed motor generators with gear drives.

Full power testing of the MPD 100 system is scheduled for early November. Although the motor/generator has been operating at full speed and load integrated into a commercial system, it is now being tested as a stand alone unit. Some of the immediate applications for this unit are centrifugal turbo compressors for air and gas, expanders, blowers, pumps or any system that can benefit from direct drive high speed technology.
