Today, newer fleets of AC powered metro trains are equipped to regenerate a significant amount of power when braking.  Unless another train is leaving the station at the same time, this regenerative power is simply wasted and turned into heat using banks or resistors to prevent causing an overvoltage on the DC bus.  As an alternative, this power can be stored and used on demand when required.
