Variable speed drives control the speed of motors, the flow of liquids through pumps and the flow of air in HVAC equipment to eliminate the wasted energy that is common when operating these devices at a fixed speed.
Traditionally, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems with batteries were placed in front of the variable speed drive to provide back-up power for critical operations. However, using a UPS in this application adds inefficiencies of 6 to 8 percent due to losses from conversion electronics (AC to DC and back to AC), reducing the efficiency gains from the variable speed drive.
VYCON® REGEN® Kinetic Energy Recycling Systems use a unique flywheel technology that can be placed directly on the variable speed drive without the added expense and complexity of placing a UPS in the front of the drive. The flywheels can provide backup power as well as regenerative energy absorption, offering 99.3% energy efficiency. In addition, VYCON REGEN systems can be located in the harsh environments, where variable speed drives are often located. Flywheels can operate in conditions up to 40°C (104°F), whereas batteries are limited to an optimal temperature of 20°C (68°F).
