Manufacturing Applications Engineer – Machining

We are currently seeking a Manufacturing Applications Engineer to oversee all processes to produce machined parts utilized in Calnetix high speed motors, generators, power electronics and magnetic bearing systems. The Manufacturing Applications Engineer is responsible for the machine schedules, programs, setup/operating documents, machine tooling/fixtures and safety. The Manufacturing Applications Engineer works closely with production personnel and engineering for successful system design integration, cost reduction, improved lead times, delivery and support of component and assembly fabrication.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Establish processes, specify equipment and tooling and manage all aspects of machining operations to ensure quality, safety and efficiency
  • Determine “Make” vs. “Buy” decisions for key components/processes
  • Recommend, purchase, and installation capital equipment and tooling
  • Prepare/manage document packages for component fabrication (e.g. machining layouts, machine programs and equipment setup/operation procedures)
  • Design tooling and fixtures required for machining components
  • Improve overall machining processes and procedures to reduce cost and lead time

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Requires BS degree in a technical field (Manufacturing, Industrial or Mechanical Engineering preferred) or equivalent combination of education/experience
  • A minimum of 8 years progressive and related experience required
  • Solid 3D mechanical design utilizing SolidWorks
  • Solid 2D drafting skills per ASME 14.5M
  • Experience in machine shop setting, both CNC and conventional with experience/knowledge programming and operating CNC Lathes, Mills, and Cylindrical Grinders (Studer preferred)
  • Knowledge of standard manufacturing processes:  casting, machining, milling, grinding, mechanical and electrical assembly, welding, inspection techniques, process piping and equipment, and pressurized assemblies
  • Kaizen, 5S, Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Open to developing new skills and take on new responsibilities
  • Good interpersonal and interfacing skills
  • Additional computer skills:  Microsoft Office Suite

None, but will work closely with production leads and technicians.

Work Environment / Physical Demands:

  • Time will be split between office and shop floor
  • Personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses, gloves hearing protection or masks may be required in some production areas
  • Work around objects that can be highly magnetized
