Calnetix Technologies to Present at International Electric Machines & Drive Conference

May 1st, 2019

Topics to Cover Challenges and Opportunities in Developing Medium Voltage Megawatt Drive Systems, Active Radial Electromagnetic Damper for Rotating Machinery Applications.

CERRITOS, Calif. – May 1, 2019 – Calnetix Technologies’ Venky Krishnan, Vice President of Business Development, and Alexei Filatov, Principal Research Engineer, will be presenting at the International Electric Machines and Drive Conference (IEMDC) in San Diego the week of May 13.

On May 13, Krishnan will give a presentation, titled, “Medium Voltage Megawatt Drive System – Challenges and Opportunities” at the plenary session. His presentation will address the system level challenges faced in designing and commercializing a variable frequency drive system utilizing high-speed, high-voltage and high-power density switching devices that incorporate Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET technology.  Krishnan also will explain different aspects of the development process, highlight the technology gaps, including areas of opportunity for future work, and discuss the potential utilization of these technologies by the electric drive industry.

“Calnetix has been developing significant advances in high-speed machine and drive technologies, and recently achieved several milestones in the development and validation of a medium voltage megawatt high-speed drive solution,” said Vatche Artinian, CEO of Calnetix Technologies. “We have identified several applications with high market potential for the medium voltage drive system, including natural gas compression, air compression for air separation, and various power generation and turbo expansion applications.”

On the same day, Filatov will present a paper co-authored by Larry Hawkins, Calnetix’s Director of Technology for Magnetic Bearings, on the use of a non-contact active radial electromagnetic damper to stabilize the rotor of a multi-stage downhole gas compressor designed to boost gas from natural gas wells for subsidiary Upwing Energy (www.upwingenergy.com).

Over 20 years since its inception, IEMDC is the premier forum for the presentation and discussion of new research results and advances in the field of electric machines and drives. IEMDC seeks to address all aspects of design, operation, control and systems integration of electric machines, electromechanical actuators and the controls and power electronic drives that implement their applications.
