Eco-friendly fleet logs a record 5,000,000 discharge and recharge cycles – surpassing competitors
LOS ANGELES – VYCON (www.vyconenergy.com), a designer and manufacturer of environmentally friendly, high-speed energy storage flywheel systems, is pleased to announce that it has just shipped its 300th flywheel system. Marking an important milestone for the company, VYCON's clean energy storage systems are deployed world-wide and provide unsurpassed power backup and power regeneration to mission-critical applications.
Data centers, hospitals, universities, broadcast studios and manufacturing plants around the globe rely on VYCON's VDC and VDC-XE clean energy storage systems to protect their critical computing processes and equipment from damaging and costly power outages. VYCON's flywheel systems bring unprecedented power capacity for instantaneous and reliable power backup and provide a greener solution to uninterruptible power systems (UPSs) that are utilizing batteries. VYCON's REGEN flywheel systems, used in regenerative power applications such as container cargo handling crane applications and light electric rail, reduce power and energy costs to port and rail operators as well as provide a reduction in greenhouse gasses.
VYCON's flywheel superiority and dependability is due to its ability to discharge and recharge very quickly when called upon during power outages. VYCON's fleet of VDC, VDC-XE and REGEN systems have logged a record five million discharge and recharge cycles – in extremely demanding power applications that oftentimes call on the VYCON systems to discharge and recharge every two minutes.
"We're very excited to have reached this important milestone of our flywheel fleet that is deployed around the world," said VYCON's President Frank DeLattre. "For flywheels, success is determined by not only the number of operating hours, but the discharge and recharge cycles. We believe this is a truer validation of the flywheel's performance as it exercises all functions of the system under real load conditions, not just in a 'ready' mode. Power quality, uptime and energy efficiency are serious concerns for our customers and this unprecedented amount of charge and discharge cycles is a solid testament to the sustainable and reliable operation of the VYCON flywheel."
Utilizing VYCON's patented flywheel technology, the VDC unit provides up to 215kW of DC power while the VDC-XE (Xtended Energy) model supplies up to 300kW of DC power within a single cabinet. For longer run times and higher power capacities, the UL listed VDC models can be easily paralleled without needing a special communications link. For extended power outages, the VDC will seamlessly provide enough ride-through protection to transfer to a standby engine generator for a continuous power system.
Tested and compatible with all major brands of three-phase UPS systems and available from VYCON's global channel partners including Eaton, Emerson Network Power and Riello UPS, the VDC units feature a 20-year life without a major service interval. Featuring optimized power electronics and full 5-axis active magnetic levitation for significantly improved power density and near zero maintenance requirements, the energy storage systems replace traditional lead-acid backup batteries used with UPS systems – providing users with a smarter and greener approach to power protection.
In addition to this milestone, over the past year, VYCON has received various industry accolades, product awards and was named to Inc. magazine's 500 List of America's Fastest Growing Private Companies in 2010. Flywheel energy storage has become an important strategic solution for customers' mission-critical applications that require reliable power while reducing their carbon footprint.
VYCON is an innovator in the design and manufacture of technologically advanced flywheel energy storage systems that enable a highly reliable, cost-effective and "green" energy storage solution for a variety of applications. The company's REGEN flywheel systems, used in regenerative power applications such as container cargo handling crane applications and light electric rail, reduce power and energy costs to port and rail operators as well as provide a reduction in greenhouse gasses. In addition, VYCON's line of VDC and VDC-XE systems are deployed in mission-critical operations around the world protecting critical computing assets against costly power outages.
