Electromechanical Engineer

Calnetix is an engineering and manufacturing company located in Southern California, committed to making a positive contribution to society and the environment by changing the way the world harvests and utilizes energy. We are focused on developing, manufacturing, and delivering advanced energy solutions for commercial applications throughout the world and for mission-critical applications for the United States Government and its Prime Contractors. Calnetix thrives on innovation and meeting new challenges. In partnership with OEMs, we utilize innovative, proprietary high-speed electric motor-generator technologies to develop next-generation, power-dense and energy-efficient products that reduce energy consumption, harmful emissions and enhance energy security.

Calnetix is looking for a mid-level electromechanical engineer to join the Magnetic Bearing Technology group with primary responsibilities to include electromagnetic design, analysis and integration of magnetic bearing actuators, non-contact position and speed sensors as well as associated electronics.  Special consideration will be given to those with a background in rotating electric machinery, mechatronics, electromagnetic actuator or non-contact position sensor design. The ideal candidate will possess leadership/teamwork skills, a positive attitude, and a willingness to listen to and learn from others.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design electromagnetic actuators for magnetic bearings using Calnetix MATLAB-based set of design tools.
  • Further develop Calnetix actuator design tools to improve performance and address new project requirements.
  • Develop new actuator topologies when the existing solutions are not sufficient.
  • Carry out detailed electromagnetic analysis using ANSYS/Maxwell or FEMM.
  • Work with design engineers to integrate Calnetix proprietary non-contact position and speed sensors into new machines.
  • Modify existing or develop new non-contact position and speed sensor solutions when the existing designs cannot meet the new project requirements.
  • Troubleshoot electromagnetic actuators, non-contact position and speed sensors in the existing installations of the machines on active magnetic bearings.
  • Assist manufacturing with resolving practical issues such as reviewing non-conformity reports, deviation requests, testing procedures, etc.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions with field service engineers, test engineers, and technicians.
  • Interface with internal and external customers, as required, for field service/ applications/ product support.

Education, Skills and Experience:

  • Master's or PhD in EE or ME with emphasis on electromechanical design is required.
  • Solid understanding of various theoretical and practical aspects of electromechanical design and analysis (magnetic circuits, magnetic saturation, eddy-currents, permanents magnets, temperature effects, selection of magnet wire, laminations, designing for PWM, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB. Experience with MathCAD is a plus.
  • Understanding of electromagnetic FEA and practical experience with one of the commercial software packages (ANSYS/Maxell is preferable).
  • Understanding of analog and digital electronic circuits.
  • Experience with mechanical design and analysis is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with 2D and/or 3D mechanical design packages (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Draftsight, etc.) is highly desirable.

Intangibles Sought:

  • Positive attitude.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Willingness to listen to and learn from others.
  • Must be able to obtain a confidential security clearance within twelve months of employment.
