Calnetix to Present Paper at ASME Turbo Conference

May 30th, 2018

Paper Presents Results of Shock Platform Testing of Active Permanent Magnetic Bearings in a Variable Speed Chilled Water Plant for U.S. Navy.

CERRITOS, Calif. – May 30, 2018 – Calnetix Technologies will present a paper on active magnetic bearing technology at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Turbo Conference and Expo next month.

Larry Hawkins, Director of Technology, Magnetic Bearings, will deliver a paper entitled “Floating Shock Platform Testing of a Magnetic Bearing Supported Chiller Compressor – Measurements and Simulation Results.” Hawkins co-authored the paper with Zhiyang Wang, a Principal Magnetic Bearing Engineer at Upwing Energy, and Koman Nambiar, Engineering Manager at Johnson Controls Navy Systems.

The paper describes the heavy weight shock qualification testing for a new chilled water plant developed for the U.S. Navy. The variable speed compressor at the heart of the system utilizes permanent magnet bias, active magnetic bearings and resiliently mounted backup bearings. The backup bearings are designed to take the primary shock overload, while the magnetic bearing control has features to ensure recovery of levitation after a shock event. For the MIL-S-901D shock certification, the chiller was mounted on a floating barge and subjected to a sequence of shock impacts generated from high-explosive charges. Hawkins will give a detailed description of the test methodology and test results. He will also describe a transient, nonlinear simulation used to model the shock testing and compare predicted and measured results.

The 2018 ASME Turbo Conference and Expo will take place in Lillestrøm, Norway, June 11-15. Now in its 63rd year, the annual technical symposium brings together experts from around the world to share the latest in turbine technology.

Visitors to the event are invited to visit Calnetix at Booth 603.
