U.S. Navy Taps Calnetix’s Technology to Develop Shipboard High-Efficiency Chillers

August 30th, 2012

Cerritos, Calif. – August 29, 2012 – The U.S. Navy has selected Calnetix Technologies, a pioneer in high-speed permanent magnet motor generators, power electronics and magnetic bearings for a variety of applications and industries, to provide design and engineering assistance for the drive portion of its next generation, two-stage, variable speed, oil-free high-efficiency chillers.

As part of an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act program, the Navy’s overall goals are to reduce chiller fuel consumption by greater than 25 percent, increase cooling capacity by at least 50 percent, improve reliability by more than 50 percent, meet environmental objectives of reducing refrigerant leakage by 90 percent and eliminate hazardous oily waste.

“Our expertise in permanent magnet (“PM”) motors and magnetic bearings will enable a simple drive system for a two-stage compressor design that will meet the Navy’s aggressive performance, reliability and environmental goals,” said Herman Artinian, Vice President of Business Development for Calnetix. “This project also advances and highlights our expertise with the demanding requirements of a naval combatant to meet severe vibration of all-weather operation and weapons affect shock.”

The Navy expects that the high-efficiency small capacity chiller prototype will commence testing at the end of 2012, and the system could be used for new ship construction as well as to back fit more than 200 current systems on existing ships.
