Traditionally, airborne turbine generators utilize gear reduction systems to drive synchronous or induction electric generators. Calnetix’s high-speed direct-drive PM generators can eliminate the gearbox, significantly improving efficiency while reducing required maintenance. Also, the size and weight of the generator can be significantly reduced, improving fuel efficiency.
Calnetix is developing lightweight air-or liquid-cooled electric motors with the combination of silicon carbide (SiC) based drives that will significantly reduce the system mass and subsequently boost fuel efficiency and flight times in next generation hybrid electric flights.
