Unmanned Vehicles (UxVs) & Satellites

Unmanned vehicles, or UxVs, and high-speed data satellite systems represent the forefront of today’s aerospace and defense markets. The future of aerospace and defense is moving towards unmanned vehicles, and the benefits that unmanned vehicles present are apparent at every level. Calnetix Technologies has worked with a number of prime contractors to design, implement and deliver small-size, light-weight electrification solutions for various all-domain UxV platforms. Calnetix’s Magnaforce™ permanent magnet (PM) motor generators and Powerflux™ magnetic bearings provide exceptional power density to allow UxVs and Satellite applications to run more efficiently while increasing reliability and cost savings.

The several different types of UxVs include:

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones are aircrafts that are flown with no pilot on board. UAVs are usually remotely piloted via a ground control system (GCS). UAVs serve many different types of applications from commercial use to research and development and for defense purposes like reconnaissance and combat. Some examples of UAVs used by the military are the MQ-1 Predator, MQ-9A Reaper and the Avenger from General Atomics.

  • Unmanned Underwater/Undersea Vehicles (UUVs)

Unmanned Underwater/Undersea Vehicles (UUVs) are platforms that operate underwater autonomously (AUVs) or are controlled remotely (ROVs). UUVs are used in commercial applications like information gathering on remote and dangerous operations. Additionally, ROVs have been used frequently in the oil and gas industry for subsea construction and drilling support. For defense applications, UUVs have been used for undetected long-distance communication, swarming tactics and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). AUVs, especially, remain as one of the military’s best undersea scouting technology.

  • Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs)

Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs) or watercrafts are vessels that operate on the surface of the water without any boat crew. USVs serve commercial applications, such as marine research, oceanographic surveying, hydrographic data collection and oil and gas exploration. For defense applications, USVs serve similar missions to UUVs but in a different domain. These include seaborne targets for combat training, submarine sensing, minesweeping and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

  • Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs)

Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) are vehicles that operate on the ground without a human onboard. They can be remotely controlled by a human operator or operate autonomously off on-board systems. UGVs in the commercial sector are utilized for applications, such as agriculture and manufacturing. For defense applications, UGVs are mainly used for operations that are difficult, dangerous and risky for human presence. This includes tasks, such as weapon targeting, explosive ordinance disposals (EODs) and other military applications like surveillance and reconnaissance.
